Lions to play two fewer matches

Halfback Rhys Webb on the run for the British and Irish Lions during their 2017 tour to New Zealand. The Lions today confirmed they will play eight games in six different South African cities – two fewer fixtures than their three previous tour including New Zealand in 2017. Two years ago the Lions scraped to an unconvincing 13-7 victory against the New Zealand Provincial Barbarians in Whangarei. With many of their expected hefty English contingent set to contest their domestic final at Twickenham seven days before their opening game in South Africa, the Lions' preparation will again be compromised. Unlike the New Zealand tour, the Lions will play no mid-week fixtures between tests.
