FreshFryCincinnati, Ohio-based Lightship Capital has made its first investment from its groundbreaking debut $50 million dollar fund for underrepresented entrepreneurs. Lightship Capital, which announced the fund in June – the largest-ever venture capital fund dedicated to growing Midwest, minority-led startups – partnered with the Open Prairie Rural Opportunities Fund, an $81 million private equity fund, to complete a $3.25 million equity round of financing into FreshFry, a Louisville, Kentucky food technology company. Lightship Capital is led by General Partners Brian Brackeen and Candice Matthews Brackeen. It's the largest initial fund run by a black woman to date, Lightship Capital said in a release. Lightship Capital General Partner, Candice Matthews Brackeen, said the investment in FreshFry was strategic.
