Libyan to choose from a long split list in the presidential vote

The Libyan election commission said Tuesday that it would take about two weeks to complete the list of eligible candidates after a legal challenge to the 98 people who registered for the vote on December 24. When elected as interim prime minister in March, Abdulhamid al-Dobeiba publicly vowed not to participate in elections to prevent the use of state positions in elections. The Election Commission, a technical organization rather than a political organization, states that most questions about candidate eligibility should be resolved by Libyan courts. Other prominent candidates include ministers and legislators from the former Prime Minister, the former interim government, and from separatist governments established during the turmoil of the last decade. In addition to at least 50% of the votes, if no one receives one vote in the first round, two rounds of voting will take place.
