Libya, the UN Security Council renews the arms embargo: Russia, China and African countries abstain

The Security Council of United Nations decided to renew the measures relating to the implementation of the arms embargo imposed on Libya for a further year. Now, all member states are authorized to seize and dispose of prohibited items, such as weapons, in international waters off Libya. Member States may temporarily store confiscated items in a secure area before final disposal. The Security Council's decision comes after the latest report from the UN Panel of Experts on Libya monitored "continued violations of the arms embargo on Libya." On the contrary, the Russian representative to the Security Council, justifying her country's abstention, criticized the effectiveness of the European operation "Irini".
