The Tripoli Court of Appeals today accepted two appeals challenging the legitimacy of the candidacy of caretaker Prime Minister Abdelhamid Dbeiba in the presidential elections scheduled for December 24. The appeals were filed by other candidates, including former Interior Minister Fati Basaga, according to several Libyan media. Dbeiba has the opportunity to appeal within 72 hours if the court rejects his candidacy. Dbeiba, 62, a wealthy businessman from Mizurata, was appointed caretaker prime minister last February by a body of 75 Libyan representatives from all sides, following a political agreement reached under the auspices of the United Nations. Like other candidates for the caretaker Prime Minister, he has vowed not to run for president.
