Liberia: PUP Chairman Samuel Kogar Declares Resolution Pledging Party’s Support to President Weah’s Reelection As Null And Void

MONROVIA – The much-trumpeted resolution of the People’s Unification Party (PUP) pledging support to the re-election bid of President George Weah violates the party’s constitution, and as such, it is null and void, said Representative Samuel Kogar, Chairman of the PUP. In the announcement, the PUP, through partisan Morris Barbay announced the party will only support the President, but not joining the President’s party- Coalition for Democratic Change (CDC). The decision raised eyebrow as some of the party’s top officials including its national chairman, Rep. Kogar, were absent and did not affix their signatures. Without mentioning the conveners, Rep. Kogar said they, apparently at behest of the Governing Council, went ahead with the meeting and adopted a resolution; a move he said, violates Section 7.2 of the party’s constitution. But like Rep. Kogar, some members distanced themselves from their party’s decision saying their action was not the general decision of the party, whose founding father was a fiercest citric of the Weah-led government.
