Speaking at the event, FAO Representative in Liberia Madam Mariatou Njie praised the Government and people of Japan for entrusting its resources to FAO to execute the two major projects that will improve Liberia agriculture secto. According to Madam Njie, over 90 percent of rice costing about of US$80 million are imported in the country yearly. “In 2018, rice represented 37.8% (Central Bank of Liberia report, 2018) of the total imports of food and live animals. Liberia population growth currently at 2.5% per annum has led the country to experience increase in demand for rice,” the FAO Country Representative said. Also speaking, Agriculture Minister Dr. Mogana S. Flomo said developing the agriculture sector for jobs creation has been the central message of President George Manneh Weah.
