Try refreshing your browser, or Letters to the editor: Let's pay politicians what they're worth Back to videoCanada has 35 Cabinet ministries along with a myriad of staff with salaries in the millions for each ministry. Look around the world and we see the United States has 15 cabinet departments, Germany 15, and the U.K. 21, and all with vastly larger populations. Matt Gurney properly resolves the paradox of high pay for politicians who deliver low quality contributions — the high pay is necessary to compensate for the long hours, days away from home and intense public scrutiny, but not necessarily for talent. The U.S.A., with an economy that is 10 times larger and a population that is nine times larger, runs its House of Representatives with only 30 per cent more (435) elected members. Attracting better talent to Canada’s Parliament is easily achieved by doubling the pay and funding such a raise by reducing the ranks by one-half to 169.
