Letter of the week As one half of a British/Kiwi couple, I know only too well the different reception Brits get overseas compared with other more “likeable” nationalities (“How to avoid being holiday Brit shamed”, last week). I’ve lost count of the number of times my husband’s antipodean twang has been welcomed by warm smiles and open arms, while my evident Britishness has triggered raised eyebrows and sniggers. Am I self-conscious about identifying as a Brit? But how can we even begin to challenge that stereotype unless we are truthful and open about our national identity? Su Oinn, HampshireDuncan Craig comments that no one in their right mind would attach a Union Jack to their rucksack when hitchhiking.
