Letter on Dalit research funds forged: UGC

New Delhi, March 18: A letter sent recently to JNU announcing an end to government funding for its Dalit studies centre was a forgery, higher education regulator University Grants Commission claimed today. "Keeping in view the same procedure the UGC would be extending these centres from 1st April, 2017 onwards," the regulator said in a statement. "The records of UGC have been checked and it is confirmed that no such letter has been issued or dispatched by the office of UGC," it said. "The perusal of the letter received by JNU shows that the letter was faxed from a Mumbai number with 022 STD code. UGC chairperson Ved Prakash, contacted on Thursday, had told this newspaper: "The letter says only funding under the plan will stop, not non-plan (funding)."
