In February, we made a special logo to badge our stories about the challenges at the Wellington City Council. But the comity burst like a central city sewage pipe this week, and the “Council in Crisis” logo came out again. I’m a big believer in the importance of local government reporting for a healthy democracy. Studies in the United States have found that, as local newspapers have closed and local government coverage has disappeared, there has been a tangible decline in civic engagement. If the Wellington city councillors are looking for ways to get unstuck, maybe they could go on a field trip.
