At the age of 17, Richard came out to his parents and told them he was gay. He came to New Zealand as a child with his parents in search of a better life. Like the overwhelming majority of homeless people, they are not in their situation because of laziness, stupidity or some other apparent fault of their own. Feeling bitter and wanting to avenge Richard, the ex-partner outed Richard to his parents, giving them graphic details about their sexual and romantic relationship.
