I can’t tell you why Andrew Johnson wore dreadlocks. Nor can I tell you why Alan Maloney, the white referee, required Johnson to cut them off. Maloney had already come under fire in 2016 for using a slur against a black referee, so we have strong reason to suspect that his behavior was racially motivated. We'll know more when we hear from New Jersey’s Division on Civil Rights, which has opened an investigation of the episode.
