I was almost 44 when I had my final child, Mabel, now six. I was among a growing number of educated career women who didn’t feel they were too old to have a baby. Indeed, I knew several women who were having their first baby at that age. For whatever reason, we all started or finished our families later in life, despite the dramatic warnings of the medical risks (women giving birth in their forties are five times more likely to suffer serious complications, according to recent research). Not one hospital appointment went by without my age being discussed, as if I had some kind of worrying condition that could not be cured.
