Let’s not rush to bow at the state’s command

A public footpath runs along our drive then up through the fields and past an old quarry to the nearest village about a mile away. Walkers need pass no other human habitation at all, and can make a delightful circular walk from either of the two nearest villages. From time to time — and most recently just before I sat down to type this — I see a lone hiker, or a couple (often with their dog) walking past. I call out a good morning or remark on the fine weather. I feel no wish to ask whether their walk is strictly necessary.
