If we read between the lines or look behind the curtain of the decision made by Biles, we will find the importance of community in supporting good mental health. It is clear Biles has done the work — she has taken the lead in her own mental health journey, and had the strength to make that decision at that moment. This community empowered Biles and gave her the confidence to make this hard choice and to talk openly about her mental health. We need that assurance that speaking up about our mental wellness will be met with caring and support, not scorn and stigma. We need to take Biles’ decision as leadership.
