“End of the world” headlines notwithstanding, the European Parliament elections last week were far more nuanced than merely the rise of populists. Are their lessons for Canada is this very mixed outcome? Canada has often seen fluctuations in partisan support of 5 to 10 per cent from one election to another. Secondly, the hard-right populism rising in the East and parts of Northern Europe is a bizarre constellation of values. We might expect that a similar Green rainbow coalition, unbothered by their internal contradictions on economic and social policy, will win votes in Canada.
