Legal berm parking 'out of control' in central Auckland suburbs

Parking is hot property in many central Auckland suburbs, so motorists are increasingly resorting to the berm. Berm parking in Auckland is getting "out of control" as the lack of enforcement becomes more widely known, a local politician says. Auckland Transport and Auckland Council are lobbying for a bylaw change to the Land Transport Rule 2004, which could see a blanket ban on berm parking that would be enforceable without signage. "We prioritise any grass berm complaints we receive and take action if it's deemed to be a safety issue," Hannan said. Motorists parking on berms in areas with signage could be ticketed for "parking contrary to a restriction", which carries a fine of $40.
