Fencing might be the coolest, most elegant sport you don’t pay attention to during the Summer Olympics. For a lesson in fencing, all you have to do is attend today’s By the Sword fencing exhibition hosted by The Villages Fencing Club and the Recreation and Parks Department at Rohan Recreation Center. Members will explain the three types of swords — the foil, the sabre and the epee — as well as how points are scored during the match, how each weapon works, parts of the uniform and the history behind the sport. It is, after all, one of five sports that has been featured in every modern Olympic Games, joining athletics, cycling, swimming and gymnastics. Then you’ll get to see exactly how the competitors fight with each sword, such as foil fencing as demonstrated by Larry Bailer, above left, of the Village of Chatham, and Hap Holden, of the Village Santiago.
