The letter was published after the UK's coronavirus death toll exceeded the grim 40,000 milestone on Friday - the highest in Europe and one of the highest in the world. "If, as seems probable, there is a second wave this winter, many more will die unless we find quick, practical solutions to some of (these) structural problems," adds the letter. It has been signed by experts including former World Health Organisation director Professor Anthony Costello and former Scientific Advisory Group for Emergencies (Sage) member Professor Deenan Pillay. As the UK emerges from lockdown, Downing Street is reportedly drawing up a 'Great Recovery Bill' to stave off mass unemployment.
