In reality, mass disruption, pollution and a divide between the city centre and its suburbs make the Périphérique a headache for motorists, nearby residents, and city planners. This week the pollution levels on the Périphérique surpassed both the official safe limit and Paris's alert levels, and were over twice that of central Paris.
