The “Sixties Scoop” refers to the removal of indigenous children from their families and placement in non-indigenous care over a period of about 20 years, beginning in the 1960s. Numerous children who were removed from their homes and placed in non-indigenous care lost their cultural identity, Wilson argued in court. Indigenous and Northern Affairs Minister Carolyn Bennett has previously stated that the government is interested in resolving Sixties Scoop litigation outside of the courts. But Premier Kathleen Wynne said Tuesday the province should examine its role in the Sixties Scoop. “I think that we need to look at everything that we can do, and I think that examining the province’s role in the Sixties Scoop is part of that,” she said.
