Lawyer among 17 Hizb ut-Tahrir men held in Chittagong

Of the detainees, seven pleaded for bail to the court, CMP Assistant Commissioner (prosecution) Kazi Shahbuddin told the Dhaka Tribune. “Based on their confession, police conducted drives in Halishahar, Nayabazar-Eidgaon, Double-mooring and Khulshi areas, and arrested the rest of the suspected Tahrir militants,” Nazmul added. Most of them were previously involved with Jamaat’s student wing Islami Chhatra Shibir and later joined Hizb ut-Tahrir. A section of Jamaat-Shibir men had joined local militant groups including Hizb ut-Tahrir and were working in concert to build a greater network with a view to waging an armed jihad from Chittagong, police said. On August 1 last year, police arrested five leaders of banned outfit Ansarullah Bangla Team from the city’s Katgarh area.
