An African immigrant jumped into Venice's Grand Canal to apparently commit suicide. After he started drowning, people watched the grim affair and nobody jumped to save the drowning man's life. After he refused to be saved with the help of life rings, nobody jumped to save the man either. An investigation has been opened by Italian magistrates after the video of the apparent suicide started to circulate over the internet, showing how bystanders screamed racist abuses while the young man drowned. Onlookers in the video were laughing and one man was also heard saying 'Let him die at this point.'
