Latest revelations are potential death knell for Scouting Ireland

Up until now Scouting Ireland has kept its head above water, barely, on the defence the historic abuse scandal engulfing the organisation related only to sins of the past. Over the past year the organisation, which has 40,000 juvenile members, has reiterated it complies fully with safeguarding standards and requirements. The idea a scouting organisation would have to cease overnight camps is unprecedented. Scouting Ireland has sought “an urgent meeting with the chair and chief executive of Tusla to understand better their concerns,” the organisation said. If Scouting Ireland fails to take action on Tusla’s urgent recommendations for change, it is likely its State funding, and by extension its survival, will again be in the crosshairs.
