Political analysts say the new legislation is a symptom of the growing unease spreading through Russian President Vladimir Putin‘s government as the conflict continues into its second calendar year. Independent media, including access to Western news sites and social-media platforms, has been blocked. Advocacy groups such as the glasnost-era Memorial Human Rights Center have been dissolved. An explosion that damaged the only bridge linking Russia to Crimea dealt a blow to the Kremlin and triggered a new escalation in the Ukraine war.
