Politicians love leaking a change in strategy, typically from an anonymous source, to gauge public opinion before deciding whether it should become policy. And, judging by this week’s rumours — such as that test and trace is to be reined in and free lateral flow tests (LFTs) are to be restricted to groups including the NHS, social care and schools — the era of “living with Covid” is getting closer. At least in the minds of some in Westminster. In recent weeks LFTs have become a more important tool for slowing the spread of coronavirus. Not only does pre-emptive testing before meeting up or going to work reduce the odds of unwittingly infecting those around us, but the tests are now used to end self-isolation
