Ashley Gilbertson for The New York Times“Sui-Lee Wee and Donald McNeil gave us the breaking news that researchers in China have identified a new virus that is behind a mysterious pneumonialike illness that has caused a panic in the central Chinese region. ‘But health officials in China and internationally are watching it carefully, as it comes from the same region where the deadly SARS epidemic broke out in the early 2000s.’”So reads a paragraph in an email sent on Jan. 9, 2020, at 2:08 a.m. The author of the email was Steve Kenny, the senior editor for nights at The New York Times; Sui-Lee Wee and Donald G. McNeil Jr. are Times reporters. The notes recorded the deaths of so many, from Covid-19 and other illnesses and acts of violence. Instead, there are notes, sent late, and there are vivid photographs.
