Laser survey of Guatemalan jungle reveals thousands of complex structures, roads built by ancient Maya


A group of archeologists and researchers studying ancient Maya used LIDAR technology to reveal the secrets of the civilization hidden within the thick jungle canopy. Flying above the jungle in a plane, the group used the technology to bounce thousands of pulsing lasers toward the jungle vegetation and the ground. For years, archeologists studying the Maya were plagued by not having a “clean picture” of the civilization. This is like seeing Europe laid out before you.”The Maya had a complex network of roads and highways used for trade. But unfortunately, while the jungle protected Maya’s secrets for thousands of years from archeologists, the LIDAR scans revealed the same can’t be said about looters.
