By studying the echoes, geologists seek to calculate the depth and structures of buried geologic formations. It revealed formations buried deep underneath sediment on the sea floor of the Great Australian Bight, a large open bay off the southern coastline of mainland Australia. They used newly acquired 3D seismic reflection data to map the landscape, which uses sound waves to form three-dimensional images of geologic formations.
