My husband and I own a rental property, so we let her and her 12-year-old move in at deeply discounted rent. But my niece drinks too much, then becomes emotionally and verbally abusive to her daughter. We are at wits’ end; the property is being destroyed, we’re not getting any income and my niece’s behaviour is getting worse. You are equally concerned about your niece, and especially her daughter. Your intentions are noble, but the effect of your kindness is feeding the beast — making it too easy for your niece to act badly.
