KOTA KINABALU: A last-ditch effort is underway by Labuan’s political and business leaders to stop a move that will curb sales of duty-free alcohol and tobacco products from Aug 1. Firm action against smugglers should be taken instead, Rozman said, adding that the move to limit retail outlets to 10 would create monopolies. Labuan MP Datuk Rozman Isli is in the federal capital with 15 Labuan Barisan Nasional and business chambers leaders to urge the federal government to put on hold the proposal that will see strict curbs in sales of duty-free goods. He said businesses from Langkawi – which would also be affected by the new rules – were also in the federal capital to appeal against their implementation. Stressing that they were not against the moves to curb smuggling, he said that the proposal to limit duty-free outlets to 10 would immediately see the closure of at least 50 duty-free shops.
