Labour under fire over ‘snobby’ Easterhouse canvassing remark

The clip, broadcast on Channel 4 News, shows a Scottish Labour activist out campaigning with Glasgow Easterhouse and Springburn candidate Paul Sweeney when they identify people on the doorstep who are “anti-SNP and anti-Labour”. The canvasser is then heard saying “it is Easterhouse after all”, before laughing, with critics accusing Labour of looking down on the East End community. SNP candidate Ivan McKee said: “Labour’s sneering, snobbish contempt for Easterhouse has been laid bare - and they need to apologise now.” He added: “The Labour Party treated communities like Easterhouse as an afterthought for decades and now they want to talk down to residents and try to stereotype people. Easterhouse is a fantastic community and people here deserve better than being talked down to by Labour snobs.”McKee went on: “It is hard to see how Paul Sweeney could ever hope to represent an area that he clearly has such contempt for. Reform and Labour have nothing to offer the people of the east end of Glasgow.
