Labour could write-off student debts worth tens of billions of pounds as part of a massive overhaul of higher education funding, John McDonnell suggested today. Mr McDonnell warned that the system was 'falling apart' and whichever government is in power would have to deal with it. The Unite boss told the BBBC on Sunday that the Labour manifesto would include student debt being 'lifted off our youth.' Labour angrily dismissed the calculations as 'fake news', and said the Tory report contained a number of 'utterly false statements'. In a speech on Tuesday, Mr McDonnell will accuse the Tories of siding with 'the billionaires, the bankers and big business'.
