The “Hillsborough law” is based on the fight for justice by the families of the 96 people who were unlawfully killed in the 1989 Hillsborough disaster. Jones was commissioned in April 2016 to produce a report on the Hillsborough families’ experience after the fresh inquests had concluded that the 96 had been unlawfully killed. Richard Burgon, the shadow justice secretary, said: “The families of those who died in the Hillsborough disaster have spent decades fighting for justice. The appalling tragedy at Grenfell Tower highlights the urgent need for a law to ensure truth and justice prevail,. “The proposed law would ensure full disclosure and proactive acceptance of wrongdoing and failures.
