Parliamentarian hits back after Daily Telegraph says South American country claims her ‘as one of its own’ because of her mother’s birthplaceThe Labor senator Katy Gallagher says she “is not and has never been” a citizen of Ecuador after revelations her mother was born in the South American country to British citizens. She says her citizenship status was investigated as part of the Labor party’s vetting when she nominated for the Senate. Under the Ecuadorian constitution established in 2008, anyone born in the country could be a citizen, as could their children. Gallagher said she had told the ALP vetting process that her mother had been born in Ecuador to British parents and that was investigated. “I am not and had never been an Ecuadorian citizen.”
