Damien Chazelle’s musical La La Land has won the Grolsch People’s Choice Award at the 2016 Toronto International Film Festival. The People’s Choice award is traditionally seen as an Oscar bellwether. Ben Wheatley’s Free Fire won the People’s Choice Midnight Madness award; runners-up were Raw, by Julia Ducournau, and André Øvredal’s The Autopsy of Jane Doe. The best short film prize went to Raymund Ribay Gutierrez from the Philippines for Imago, his first film.
