That certainly characterizes the recent history of LGBTQ rights. Fast forward this year’s celebrations, where Pride Toronto expects more than 200,000 marchers and 2.4 million spectators to join Sunday’s parade. But that very acceptance has produced a backlash, one keenly felt by Pride Toronto, which has seen skyrocketing policing and insurance costs. But for the LGBTQ community, the sign was a lot more harrowing. If the backlash still isn’t clear enough, consider this: The month of June saw the second most assaults on LGBTQ people, which means Pride Month is, ironically, among the most dangerous times for members of Toronto’s LGBTQ community.
