LGB teens in B.C. staying away from organized sport says new study

Senior study author Elizabeth Saewyc says although youth participation in sport is falling across all categories in B.C., the rate of drop off is higher for LGB youth. The study found that over a 15 year period between 1998 and 2013 there was a significant decline in lesbian, gay and bisexual (LGB) teens' participation in sports in British Columbia. It also found that LGB youth were half as likely to play sports as straight youth. Saewyc believes one reason may be that LGB youth aren't made to feel welcome in high school and community sports. Saewyc points out there's still very few openly gay professional athletes which deprives gay youth of a badly-needed role models.
