Times columnist Bill Plaschke won first place 2022 Associated Press sports editors‘ columnist competition, which expanded the publication’s accolades, including Grand Slam honors. In the short film category, Ben Bolch took third place for his look at UCLA running back Zach Charbonnet’s unique bond with his special needs sister. Jorge Castillo placed seventh in the feature film category for his portrait of Dodgers pitcher Julio Urías and placed 10th in the short film category for his view of mariachis at Dodger Stadium. Castillo, Jack Harris, Dylan Hernández, Bill Shaikin and Houston Mitchell ranked ninth in event coverage for their work on the Dodgers’ elimination from the playoffs. APSE previously announced that the Times sports staff received Grand Slam awards for the third consecutive year.
