L.A. County’s deadliest day for COVID-19: More than 300 fatalities


L.A. County recorded 318 deaths Friday, a figure that easily tops the previous high of 291, logged on New Year’s Eve. AdvertisementPrior to the pandemic, L.A. County saw an average of 170 deaths a day, due to everything from car crashes to homicides to heart attacks. L.A. County is now averaging 189 COVID-19 deaths a day over the past week. In early December, about 30 people were dying a day in L.A. County; by Friday, about 190 people were dying a day over the past week. Cal-OES said there’s a plan to set up an additional temporary morgue at the campus of the L.A. County coroner, with at least five trailers supplied by Cal-OES and another five supplied by L.A. County.
