Kynaston McShine, Curator of Historic Art Exhibitions, Dies at 82

It was one of the first museum exhibitions devoted to the movement that was becoming known as Minimalism, which the show’s success accelerated. By 1968 Mr. McShine was back at the Modern, this time in the department of painting and sculpture as an associate curator. She had given Mr. McShine access to her extensive files on art’s new directions while he was working on the show. Before entering the nursing home, Mr. McShine had homes in Manhattan and on the East End of Long Island, in Springs. Mr. McShine was instrumental in establishing the Modern’s Project exhibition series, small-format shows devoted to the art of emerging, experimental artists, and became its director.
