Mounting student mental health strains have also pushed academic administrators to spend millions on counselling and other support services. Public and private investments poured $16 billion into mental health services in 2015 to meet the needs of all Canadians, according to a 2017 report from the Mental Health Commission of Canada (MHCC). In Ontario, 28,000 children and youth are waiting as long as 2.5 years to access mental health care, according to a 2020 report from Children’s Mental Health Ontario. It would include detecting and addressing mental health risk factors early and improving access and quality of mental health treatment. Statistics Canada data collected last year reveals parents misjudge the mental health of their children about half the time.
