Kukup folks hopeful tourism will grow

PONTIAN: Business owners in Kukup town are hopeful the tourism sector here would grow despite the absence of Singaporean visitors. The town, located about 60km away from Johor Baru used to be packed with tourists, especially Singaporeans on weekends and public holidays. “Most visitors usually stay one night at the chalets in town and eat at the seafood restaurants here or take a boat ride to Pulau Kukup, ” she said. Ter Hwa Hay, 69, who provides boat services to Pulau Kukup, said he now receives an average of about 100 passengers every weekend. “We used to get about 800 to 1,000 passengers on weekends before the outbreak but now only see about 10% of that number.
