KUCHING: Chinese business premises, restaurants as well as some residential areas in the town have been spotted lighting joss sticks and burning ‘hell money’ early in this morning as temples are busy preparing for the annual Hungry Ghost Month celebration today. Candles, flags and joss sticks can also be seen lit along the roadside as to lead the ‘good brothers’ to where the food offerings and ‘hell money’ are placed. Kuching Teochew Association committee member Sim Kheng Hong said the gate opens in the seventh month but major celebrations would be held on the 15th day. Each year, he said, the event can attract up to 500 people including tourists as it is believed who managed to grab the food items will be blessed with luck. Meanwhile, checks around the town including Taman BDC and 3rd Mile Old Market also saw similar preparations for the celebration tonight.
