The actor had struggled with the suicide of his son Julian St John, who died in 2014 while getting treatment at a mental health facility in Long Beach, LA. Kristoff blamed the hospital for his son's death, claiming they gave him the item he used to take his life. He and his ex-wife Mia St John set up the El Saber es Poder (Knowledge is Power) Foundation to help others battling mental health problems to honour their son. Kristoff played Neil Winters on the soap since 1991 and won nine Daytime Emmy Award nominations for his role.
