Koreas to hold railway, road groundbreaking ceremony on Dec. 26

SEOUL — The two Koreas agreed on Thursday to hold a groundbreaking ceremony for the modernization and reconnection of cross-border railways and roads this month, in accordance with the agreement reached between the two leaders in September. “As a result of an inter-Korean meeting (held Thursday), a consensus that the groundbreaking ceremony should be held on Dec. 26 at Panmun Station in North Korea’s border town of Kaesong was reached,” a statement released by the South’s Ministry of Unification said. Prior to the release of Thursday’s statement, skepticism had surrounded the plan to hold the ceremony by the end of the year. The joint test-operations on sections of eastern railway in the North are expected to be completed next week. The two Koreas also have yet to carry out an inspection of the eastern road running through the Korean Peninsula.
