Port Said tunnels inaugurated by President Sisi to connect South Port Said with Sinai - TV Screen shotCAIRO – 25 November 2019: The construction of three tunnels designed to connect the South Port Said are to Sinai has been finalized over the course of four consecutive years; the tunnels are set to be inaugurated soon by President Abdel Fatah al-Sisi.1- First, a total of 6,000 Egyptian workers and engineers carried out the construction works of the tunnels, under the supervision of the Armed Forces Engineering Authority.2- The tunnels pass beneath Suez Canal at a depth of 42 meters. The total time estimated for vehicles to cross the tunnels is between 5 to 7 minutes at a speed of 40 km/h.3- The length of each tunnel is 3,950 meters linked to a set of emergency transits, while the internal diameter of each tunnel is 11.4 meters, and the outer diameter is 12.6 meters.4- Each tunnel accommodates 2,000 cars per hour, at a rate of 40,000 cars per day.5- The tunnel’s height is 5.5 meters, including two lanes with a width of 3.6 meters each.6- The tunnels are supported with four power sources, making an electricity cut impossible.7- A total of 60 surveillance cameras are installed in each tunnel, in addition to an emergency communication system installed every 250 meters. Each tunnel consists of 25,000 pieces of concrete.
