Kiwis buying more chocolate since start of lockdown

Chocolate sales were holding steady despite the economic impact of Covid-19, says Whittaker’s chief executive James Ardern. Kiwis are buying more chocolate than they were a year ago, while global chocolate consumption has slumped since the outbreak of Covid-19. Around the world, lockdown restrictions have gone hand in hand with lower chocolate sales, a report from Rabobank says. Data from Nielsen shows that from the start of the level 4 lockdown till July 19, the value of chocolate sales in supermarkets increased 14 per cent overall, and chocolate sales were up over 5 per cent. While chocolate sales were growing, it was at a slower pace than the overall grocery sector., a Nielsen spokesman said.
