King knew it could cost him his liberty and life, but he dared to stand up for human rights at any cost. King’s legacy reminds us that in an era where all the odds were against him, he called on the United States to uphold judicial independence. His legacy also demonstrates the vital role played by legislation in ensuring free speech and assembly. Those ideals are eminently captured in one of the finest books, The Promise and the Dream: The Untold Story of Martin Luther King, Jr. and Robert F. Kennedy, published recently by David Margolick (2018). It chronicles how Robert F. Kennedy (former attorney-general and the brother of former US president John F. Kennedy), himself a civil rights advocate, formed a close relationship with King.
